Cargill has a number of wholly-owned operations and joint ventures for the production of biodiesel in Europe. These include facilities in Belgium, Germany and in the UK.
Cargill acquired the Vamo Mills soy crushing plant in Ghent from the Vandemoortele Group in 1998. In 2005, biodiesel was introduced into Europe and the Belgian biodiesel quota offered new opportunities for the Ghent plant. Since then Cargill has adapted the existing facility, built a refinery and a biodiesel unit, and invested in a joint venture called “Bioro”, from which the first biodiesel was produced in April 2008. The Ghent facility is today a semi-refinery multi-seed plant which also produces biodiesel. .
The Bioro site in Ghent is currently the only complex in the country able to handle the complete biodiesel production cycle - from raw material processing to the refined product - in a single integrated location.
